On Burmese Proverbs and Maxims

In English, to talk about making the best use of time and circumstances, you’d say, make hay while the sun shines. But in Burmese, it’s to weave while the moon shines. To do things in the wrong order is to put the cart before the horse in English. In Burmese, it’s to put the plough before the ox. If someone is thinking too far ahead, you might say, don’t count your chicken before they hatch. In Burmese, we would say, the fritter is nowhere near done, but you’re worried about it burning your lips.

အိုးချင်းထားအိုးချင်းထိ၊ ကြိုးချင်းထား ကြိုးချင်းငြိ A pot will rub against the pots nearby; a string will get entangled to the strings nearby. (One cannot help but become involved with those nearby.)

ကျားကြောက်လို့ရှင်ကြီးကိုး၊ ရှင်ကြီးကျားထက်ဆိုး Turning to a deity for protection from the tiger, you find out the deity is worse than the tiger. (Beware of seeking help from the wrong authority.)
တစ်ရွာမပြောင်း သူကောင်းမဖြစ် Those who don’t move to a new village, won’t rise to greatness (a proverb that urges people to take risk).
စွန့်စားတယ် to take risk, to seek adventure
သေချင်တဲ့ကျားတောပြောင်း A tiger that relocates to a different forest, is a tiger that courts death.
ချောင်းကိုပြစ်၍မြစ်ကိုရှာ၊ ရေသာများ၍ငါးမတွေ့ Forsaking the stream for the river, one finds more water but no fish.
ကျင်လည်တဲ့အသိုင်းအဝိုင်း a familiar environment or circle
ကျွဲပါးစောင်းတီး to serenade a buffalo with a harp (to engage in a futile act)
ခွေးမြီးကောက်ကျဉ်တောက်စွပ် to straighten a dog’s crooked tail with a bamboo tube (to engage in a futile act)

မုန့်ဆီကြော်ဘယ်ဆီနေမှန်းမသိ နှုတ်ခမ်းနာနဲ့တည့်ပါ့မလား (တွေးပူ) The fritter is nowhere to be found, yet she’s worried about burning her lips (to worry about unlikely events).
